What a cast of characters! I liked reading this memoir because I am also from Egypt and I could relate to most events. I had trouble keeping them straight. This definitely won't be the last book I read by Mr. Aciman. Aciman's book reads like a dream. Aciman is as good a writer as I had read. The book is somewhat similar to- The Man in the White Sharkskin Suit, which also covers about the same time frame in Egypt of a different, Jewish family in Cairo, who then emigrated to America when they too could no longer live, safely in Egypt in the 40s and 50s. What a cast of characters! It is a real marvel to be able to write in a second language better than most in their native language. Unlike any other such biography I have read, it does not have "Poor Us' as a main theme, rather a description of how the actions of the few on both sides, had shattered a beautiful world, which existed, with no regards to the difference between the individuals involved. I lack Aciman's irony and wit to counter the grief from having lived sporadically in Egypt's underbelly in Cairo, married and lost an Egyptian husband...Egypt was and possibly still is in some ways, a land where you are instantly transported back to a lifetime that is not known consciously but is at the same time familiar. So it is with Aciman's childhood Alexandria where he was born and with his parents and grandparents, who settled there having fled various corners of the Levant, enjoys a privileged but increasingly precarious existence, until, less than 50 years ago, the established order of Jewish life in Egypt comes to an end. This biographical book of his life in Alexandria with an extended family who had emigrated from Turkey, is fascinating. Every word exudes love and with it a sad sense of loss and nostalgia. He teaches literature at Bard College and lives in Manhattan.
