At first, Myshkin is welcomed into the upper-class society as something of a curiosity, a penniless and childlike character upon whom the cynical group focuses with amusement. ‘You can’t be the way you pretended to be just now. The literary models for the Prince were Don Quixote and Pickwick, both, according to Dostoevsky, beautiful characters, whose beauty is derided by others who remain blind to it. Instead he is a purely good, completely honest man. Asa result, Dostoevsky realized that he needed to produce a work that would lift him out of debt and change his family's fortunes. For Dostoevsky, beauty was equated with moral nobility and perfection, or goodness. This suburb, in which the czars had a palace as a vacation retreat, was also the terminus of the first Russian railroad. To that end, he began work on a novel which he had promised the journal Russian Messenger. All the elements of these two books work to refute this idea. Moreover, while traditional Russian cities were built of wood and suffered frequent fires, St. Petersburg is a city of stone. He has spent most of his life in a near-catatonic state and so has no idea of proper manners or society. Even the Prince’s (and Dostoevsky’s) most famous dictum: Beauty will save the world is problematised by being reported at second or even third hand. The closest the novel comes to a focussed dialectic is in the long document that Ippolit reads out at the prince’s birthday party. The Prince says that beauty saves the world!” But Ippolit himself is unsure whether the Prince has in fact said it: he heard that the Prince said it from someone else, and the Prince neither confirms nor contradicts him. It’s this suggestion that perhaps forms the basis for Dostoevsky’s subsequent mythical status as a prophet of Russia and Orthodoxy. Endowed with Christ-like spiritual attributes and professing a childlike, innocent belief in the possibility of achieving heaven on earth, Myshkin obliviously enters a Russian society corroded by avariciousness, moral corruption, and spiritual desolation. This lack of a consistently foregrounded controlling vision results in a slower book, differently and less hurriedly paced. Almost immediately upon arriving, Myshkin makes clear his dream to influence all of his acquaintances on the merits of living a life of honesty and humility. But also it would create a ton of problems since Myshkin is socially wildly inappropriate for Aglaya, and because she is very jealous of Nastasya. And yet, in spite of that the human being longs for life: I did not deceive myself and understood the matter clearly. One day, a Prince from a foreign land came to seek her hand. Dostoevsky wrote The Idiot between 1867 and 1868, at a time when he endured dire financial and emotional difficulties. ... And this isn't some analysis tacked on after the fact, either. The text is studded with newspaper reports of crimes, but these are also just more examples of hearsay. He falls in love with two different women and struggles to choose between the two of them... Part of the difficulty was in the aim he had set himself.
